For the first time in decades, Tayport Band will compete in the fourth section at the Scottish Championships being held at the Rothes Halls, Glenrothes on Saturday 13 March 2010. The last few years have seen a decline in membership largely due to work and study commitments.
That decline now seems to have been halted, and we?re pleasantly surprised to be taking to the stage with a full band on the day. Just a few months ago it was almost touch and go whether we?d even take part this year but, thanks to signing several new faces as well as drafting in a number of long standing members who?d been taking time out, we?re back!
We earned ourselves a good result in the Fife contest held in Kirkcaldy back in October last year, coming 7th overall with our own choice test piece ?Dimensions? [Peter Graham], and beating several higher section bands along the way. Let?s hope we can build on that success with our performance of Philip Sparke?s ?Saint Saens Variations? and get a result that earns us a visit to Harrogate for the Nationals later in the year!
A special mention also goes to ex member Bernard Doughty, currently principal trombone with the Cran Canaria Philharmonic, for his help and words of encouragement in the run up to the contest.
