Fife Charities Contest, October 2009

After a long break from contests other than the obligatory Scottish Championships, we made it to this year's Fife Charities held in the Adam Smith Theatre, Kirkcaldy on Saturday 3rd October,  We were delighted to bring home some silverware by winning the best Fife "B" Band award. We were also particularly pleased our rendition of Peter Graham's "Dimensions" gained us 7th placing (from 17) in the main result. Now the only issue is, who polishes the silver?

Fife and Central Open Contest, October 2007

We had a great day out at this contest where much of our hard work in recent months resulted in an overall placing of joint eighth (from a field of nineteen) and the award of the Best 3rd Section (joint) and Best Fife "B" Band. Our placing in the test piece section was actually sixth, which is encouraging since it was this part of the contest in which we most wanted to do well, having treated the march and hymn tune parts as somewhat incidental. Let's hope we can build on this success in the run up to the Scottish Championships in March 2008

Scottish Championships, Dundee, March 2007

We are pleased to be able to say that our descent into the lower sections has again been halted. While in both 2004 and 2006, we found ourselves relegated to a lower section, this year we held our own, coming 6th from a field of 12 bands.

In reality we could have been placed higher had an unfortunate administrative hiccup not resulted in the band being deprived of its full time in the warmup room. As a result we took to the contest stage feeling rather rushed and anxious - another effect was that the band layout was set incorrectly! This resulted in our giving a considerably poorer quality of performance than we were capable of.

Despite such problems above, we held together well and gave a good account of a fairly tricky test piece (Prelude and Jubilate by Darrol Barry, conducted by Frank Culross). Particulary pleasing since as recently as January, there was still some uncertainty as to whether we could muster a suitable band for this contest! Well done to all.

Scottish Championships, Motherwell, March 2006

Conducted by Brian Deans, we played Howard Snell's "Images of the Millenium" but did not manage to impress on the day, resulting in further relegation to section three!

Scottish Championships, Dundee, March 2005

On "home turf" we managed to gain a credible eighth place playing Vaughan Williams' "Variations for Brass Band", conducted by Peter Ratnik.

Scottish Championships, Motherwell, March 2004

Conducted by Iain Davy, we gave a good performance of "Coventry Variations" by Bramwell Tovey - unfortunately so did the other bands! Our last placing combined with previous years' aggregate scores resulted in our relegation to section two.

Scottish Championships, Falkirk, March 2003

Our contesting year got off to a start with Arthur Butterworth's "Passacaglia on a Theme of Brahms". This is a very challenging work which demands an orchestral approach to the musical content.

Although we played well on the day, we had to settle for an 8th placing. While we survived in our section this time, our result does mean we'll be looking for a 6th or better placing next year in order to avoid relegation in 2004!

The pictures below chart our activities throughout the day - they were taken by our visiting horn player James from Texas!
